About
About BackupForDevs
Independent backup and recovery guides for developers and small teams — tested, priced, and explained without hype.
What this site is
BackupForDevs is an independent publication about backing up and restoring the data developers actually depend on: source code, databases, secrets, Docker volumes, laptops, and NAS systems.
It is written and maintained by an independent software developer with experience building and shipping desktop software. The goal is simple: explain what to back up, how to restore it, and what it costs — without treating every article as a listicle.
Who it is for
- Independent developers and small software teams (roughly 1–20 people).
- Technical users running a NAS or home lab.
- Anyone responsible for keeping a small amount of important data recoverable.
This is not an enterprise procurement site. It is written for people who have to implement and test the backup themselves.
How the guides are structured
Each guide aims to answer four questions:
- What exactly are we protecting, and what can go wrong?
- What is the simplest reliable setup?
- How do you restore it, and how do you verify the restore?
- What does it cost, including egress and operational overhead?
Guides are written to be followed. Where a step depends on a specific tool or provider, the assumptions and limitations are stated.
Editorial independence
Recommendations are based on fit, pricing, and restore workflow — not on commission rates. Some links on this site may be affiliate links, which means BackupForDevs may earn a commission if you buy through them. The price you pay is the same either way.
We include non-affiliate options where they are relevant, and we do not accept paid rankings. Read the full affiliate disclosure.
